Solar batteries and chargers

Solar batteriesThere are three main types of solar batteries that can be used with solar power systems: flooded lead acid batteries, gelled electrolyte sealed lead acid batteries, and absorbed glass mat sealed lead acid (AGM) batteries. The type that you choose to use in conjunction with your solar power system depends greatly on your system, your preference, and your bank account.
Flooded lead acid solar battery – These have been used with solar power systems for the longest period of time; the majority of systems still use them; they are the least expensive (in cost per amp-hour); and they tend to have the longest life. Of course, they require regular maintenance – keeping them clean, equalizing charges, and watering.
Gelled lead batteries – These are easy to transport and less likely to leak than their flooded lead acid counterpart. They generally have to be charged the slowest of any of the batteries to avoid decreasing capacity. They are good to use with system that have lower discharge rates (like with back-up systems)
AGM solar batteries – These are up-and-coming solar batteries. They are starting to replace their gelled lead counterparts as their price comes down. They are maintenance free and great for use as battery back-up in a grid-tied solar power system. These cannot be spilled: they are completely sealed. Therefore, they are better for the environment. They have very little corrosive fumes. They are vibration resistant, can be transported safely, and they can be turned on their sides or even upside down.
Of course, these above-mentioned solar batteries are the type that are used with a solar power system, used to store energy created by the sun which is, in turn, used to run certain elements of a household. Other solar batteries are those that are used for simpler applications, like running a PDA or an mp3 player.

These are basically rechargeable batteries, recharged by a solar battery charger. There are different types of solar battery chargers. Some charge basic AA or AAA batteries. Others can have cell phones or other such devices plugged directly into them.
